a system of government in which power is split between national and state governments
Federalism
A government whose powers are defined and limited by a constitution
Limited government
The administration of justice according to established rules and principles; fair treatment through the normal judicial system especially as a citizen’s entitlement.
Due process
Method of managing, maintaining, and gaining control of government (who gets what, when, and how?)
Politics
Freedom from government control; the greatest freedom of the individual consistent with the freedom of other individuals
liberty
A voluntary agreement between individuals to secure their rights and welfare by creating a government and abiding by it’s laws
Social contract
The idea that the ultimate power resides in the people
popular sovereignty
According to Locke, something that all people are born with, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
Natural rights
Equal voting rights for all adult citizens of a nation
universal suffrage
Respecting the rights of others and giving them what is rightfully theirs; fairness; rightfulness
justice
The study of citizenship, government. and what it means to be a citizen
civics
The principle that the law applies to everyone, even those who govern
rule of law
The democratic principle that a government follows the preferences of the majority but protects the rights of the minority
