Unit 1 Flashcards
(24 cards)
Chemistry
A branch of science that studies the composition and properties of matter and the changes it undergoes.
Organic
The study of carbon-containing compounds.
Inorganic
Studies everything except carbon.
Biochemistry
Chemistry of living things.
Physical
Measuring physical properties of substances.
Analytical
Determining the amounts of material in samples.
Environmental
Combining all fields and apply environmental issues.
Sig Figs
Critical when reporting scientific data because thru give the reader an idea of how well you could s tally measure/report your data.
Mass
A measurement of the amount of matter something contains.
Weight
The measurement of the pull of gravity on an object.
Density
The measure of a mass per a unit volume.
Accuracy
Closeness of measurements to the actual value.
Precision
Ability of the measurement to be repeated consistently.
Bar Graph
Shows how many of something are in each category.
Pie Graph
Shows how a whole is broken into parts.
Line Graph
Shows continuous change .
Scientific Method
Is a process containing the fundamental elements of science.
Observing
The use of the senses and equipment to obtain information, usually by making measurements and collecting data.
Hypothesis
A possible explanation for an observation, and is testable.
Control
Whatever is unchanging.
Variable
Whatever is changing.
MSDS
Material Safety Data Sheet; a legal document containing information on the potential effects on your health form exposure to chemicals.
Neutralization
A chemical reaction in which an acid and base react to form a salt and water(in most cases).
Dilution
Reduces the concentration of a chemical.
