Unit 1 Flashcards
To master all information related to human geography (15 cards)
Geography
a field of science devoted to the study of the lands, features, inhabitants, and phenomena of the Earth and planets.
Human Geography
Human geography is the branch of geography that deals with the study of people and their communities, cultures, economies, and interactions with the environment by studying their relations with and across space and place.
Physiccal Geography
the branch of natural science which deals with the study of processes and patterns in the natural environment like the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and geosphere, as opposed to the cultural or built environment which is the domain of human geography.
the difference between physical and human geography
Human geography deals with the study of people and their cultures and such while physical geography deals with the study of processes and patterns in the natural environment.
three different type of maps geographers use
The first type of map is a physical map, this map usually focuses on the physical attributes of the place such as mountains and valleys etc. A political map is the organization of the different countries and states and their boundaries. A thematic map is the most unique map because this map usually tells a story about whatever place you are talking about.
Cartography
the science of map making
maps
As a reference tool to identify an object’s absolute and relative location, As a communications tool to convey the distribution of human activities or physical features. (i.e. The Thematic Maps)
absolute location
the longitude and latitude on a map and is more specific then relative location.
relative location
Relative location is location based on the surroundings near the thing that you are trying to locate this method is usually more broad and is used for a big location such as a state or a city.
describe two ways geographers use maps
- As a reference tool to identify an object’s absolute and relative location. We consult maps to generally learn where something is located (i.e. In which countries does the Himalayan Mountain Range run through?).
- As a communications tool to convey the distribution of human activities or physical features. (i.e. The Thematic Maps)
Earliest maps
reference tools—simple navigation devices to show a traveler how to get from Point A to Point B. and now can be used to get peoples exact location.
Mental maps
a personal visualization of spatial information. In other words, it’s a map inside our own minds.
Activity spaces
identify the area that your travel across through your daily cycle (i.e. your routine area of travel. Home to school. School to practice, etc.)
three ways we use mental maps
Finding our way from point A to point B
Organizing and storing information for future reference
A way to make meaning
how mental maps are used in human geography
Mental maps provide people with essential means of making sense of the world and of storing and recalling information about the patterns of Earth’s physical and human features.
