Unit 1 Flashcards
(32 cards)
Nikola Tesla toyed with the idea of what in the early 1900’s?
world wireless system
What is packet switching used for?
a method for effectively transmitting electronic data.
On October 29, 1969 ________ delivered it’s first message from one computer to another
ARPAnet
The ARPAnet message is considered what type of communication?
node-to-node
Invented by Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf
Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
This communications model set the standards for how data could be transmitted between multiple networks
Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
The assembly of these networks became known as the modern internet
ARPANET & TCP/IP “network of networks”
Inventor of the World Wide Web
Tim Berners-Lee
This organization facilitates the open development of standards and protocols for the technical infrastructure of the Internet, including the oversight of the Internet Architecture Board (IAB).
The Internet Society (ISOC)
This organization is responsible for the overall management and development of Internet standards and oversight of the architecture for protocols and procedures used by the internet.
The Internet Architecture Board (IAB)
This organization’s mission is to develop, update, and maintain Internet and TCP/IP technologies, produce Request for Comments (RFC) document, are the primaries for developing IETF specifications and guidelines
The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
A professional organization for those in the field who are dedicated to advancing technological innovation and creating standards.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
World’s largest developer of international standards for a wide variety of products and services. Responsible for the OSI reference model.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
Focus on long-term research related to internet and TCP/IP, consist of research groups for long-term development efforts.
Anti Spam, Crypto Forum, Peer to Peer, and Router groups to name a few.
Internet Research Task Force (IRTF)
Name two significant standards in computer networking?
IEEE 802.3 and IEEE 802.11
Responsible for coordinating the maintenance and procedures of several databases related to namespaces (DNS) and numerical spaces of the Internet (IP).
Internet Assigned Number Authority (IANA) & Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
a digital telecommunications network for sharing resources between nodes.
A Computer Network
Name 5 computer network components
Switches Routers Servers Clients Transmission Media Access Points Shared Data Network Interface Card Local Operating System Network Operating System Protocol Hub LAN Cable
This component works as a controller which connects computers, printers, and other hardware devices to a network in a campus or a building. It allows devices on your network to communicate with each other, as well as with other networks. It helps you to share resources and reduce the costing of any organization.
Switches
This network component helps you to connect with multiple networks. It enables you to share a single internet connection with multiple devices and saves money. This networking component acts as a dispatcher, which allows you to analyze data sent across a network. It automatically selects the best route for data to travel and send it on its way.
Router
This component is a computer that holds shared programs, files, and the network operating system, and allow access to network resources to all the users of the network.
Servers
This network component computer devices which access and uses the network as well as shares network resources. They are also users of the network, as they can send and receive requests from the server.
Clients
This network component is a carrier used to interconnect computers in a network, such as coaxial cable, twisted-pair wire, and optical fiber cable. It is also known as links, channels, or lines.
Transmission media
The network component allow devices to connect to the wireless network without cables. A wireless network allows you to bring new devices and provides flexible support to mobile users.
