Unit 1 Flashcards
(30 cards)
Space Time Compression
How long it takes for a person or idea to travel has gone down as technology improves.
Tobler’s First Law
everything is connected to everything else, but near things tend to be more connected than distant ones
Distance Decay
the effects of distance on interaction, generally the greater the distance the less interaction
Cartography
The art of map making
Purpose of Maps
As a reference tool for location and a communication tool to show the distribution of human and physical features.
Mental Map
An internal representation of a portion of Earth’s surface based on what an individual knows about a place
Reference Map
Shows absolute location and directions, A normal Map
Thematic Maps
A communication tool that shows distribution of human and physical features, they emphasize specific information
Types of Thematic Maps
Cartogram, Proportional Symbol, Dot, Choropleth, Flow, Isoline
Cultural Ecology
the geographic study of human-environment relationships
Relative Location/Situation
The position of a place in relation to another place
Choropleth Map
On these maps, each unit area is shaded or color to suggest magnitude of the event or items within its border. Darker color equals greater occurrence, shows the dominance of a trait
Advantages of Choropleth Maps
Easy to visualize how a measurement varies across an area, when Identifying regions it is important
Disadvantages Of a Choropleth Map
Assumes that a trait is true for everyone in an area, problems with induction, difficult to distinguish different shades in maps, false impression of abrupt changes at boundaries of shaded units
Proportional Symbol/ Graduated Symbol Map
A thematic map that uses symbols, size of symbol corresponds to magnitude.
Advantages of Proportional Symbol/ Graduated Symbol Map
The map shows data occurring at points, they show precise numbers, they are easy to make.
Disadvantages of Proportional Symbol/ Graduated Symbol Map
it is hard to show density, hard to tell relationship between different sizes of symbols
Dot Distribution Map
The Dots on the map indicate the # of occurrence in a area and shows the varying density of a phenomena
Advantages of Dot Distribution Map
Best at showing distribution, easy to identify and understand, can be combined with other thematic maps
Disadvantages of Dot Distribution Map
If dots are too dense it can be hard to read
Cartogram
on this map: Some thematic mapping variable is substituted for land area, adjusts size and shape(distorts) of the country to correspond to the magnitude of the mapped feature
Advantages/Disadvantage of Cartogram Maps
Good at showing the relationship between spatial units/Difficult to read
Flow Line Map
Shows movement of people, information, and goods between places. The bigger the lines are, the more movement
Isoline Map
This map has continuous lines that connect points of of equal values, colors/sections on the map have the same value
