Define: Typical and Atypical Behaviour
Typical behaviour means that a person acts as they usually do. Atypical behaviour is when a person acts in ways that are unusual to them.
Define: Adaptive and Maladaptive Behaviour
Adaptive behaviour involves actions that enable a person to effectively carry out their everyday tasks. Maladaptive behaviour interferes with a persons ability to function properly.
Socio-cultural approach to abnormality
Thoughts, feelings and behaviours that are viewed as acceptable in one culture are considered normal and those that are unacceptable are abnormal. (varies for cultures)
Functional approach to abnormality
Thoughts, feelings and behaviours are viewed as normal if the individual can cope with living independently in society and abnormal if they are unable to function effectively
Historical approach to abnormality
What is considered normal/abnormal in a particular society or culture is dependant on the era that the judgement is made
Medical approach to abnormality
Thoughts, feeling and behaviours are viewed as having an underlying biological cause that can usually be diagnosed and treated
Statistical approach to abnormality
If a large majorityof people ‘statistical average’, think, feel or behave in a certain way, it is considered normal.
Situational approach to abnormality
Situational approach to abnormality Within a society or culture, thoughts, feelings and behaviours that may be considered normal in one situation may be considered abnormal in another
