Unit 1-Biology Molecules Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is a monomer?
Smaller units which can create large molecules.
What is a polymer?
Made from lots of monomers bonded together.
Name 3 monosaccharides
Glucose, Fructose, Galactose
Name 3 Disaccharides
Sucrose, Maltose, Lactose
Name 3 Polysaccharides
Starch, Cellulose, Glycogen
What is the formula of Glucose?
C6H1206
What is a condensation reaction?
Joining two molecules together by removing water.
How is maltose formed?
Condensation reaction between 2 alpha glucose molecules.
How is lactose formed?
Condensation reaction between Glucose and Galactose.
How is Sucrose formed?
Condensation reaction between Glucose and Fructose.
How is glucose stored in animals?
Glycogen
What is starch made of?
Amylose and Amylopectin.(polymers of alpha glucose)
What is amylose?
-Long unbranched chain
-1-4 glycosidic bonds
-coils due to angles of glycosidic bond making it compact and useful for storage
What is amylopectin?
-1-4 and 1-6 glycosidic bonds cause branching
-Side branches allow enzymes to get to glycosidic bonds easily so glucose can be released quickly
What is an advantage of starch?
It is insoluble so it doesn’t affect water potential making it good for storage.
