The taming of animals for human use, such as work or as food
Domestication
(750,000 BCE - 10,000 BCE) Old Stone Age. A period of time in human history characterized by the use of stone tools and the use of hunting and gathering
Paleolithic Age
A form of writing developed by the Sumerians using a wedge shaped stylus and clay tablets
Cuneiform
A rectangular tiered temple made of mudbricks constructed by the ancient Sumerians associated with religious purposes
Ziggurat
A geographical area of fertile land in the Middle East stretching in a broad semi-circle from the Nile to the Tigris and Euphrates
Fertile Cresent
Greek for “land between two rivers” fertile farming valley in Central Asia that owes its fertile character to Tigris and Euphrates rivers
Mesopotamia
Farming in which only enough food to feed one’s family is produced
Subsistence farming
A worker in a skilled trade or craft; especially one that involves making things by hand
Artisan
Situation in which behavior is characterized by and based on long-standing customs, habits, and rituals
Traditional society
The world’s first civilization, founded in Mesopotamia, which existed for over 3,000 years
