Democracy
Rule by the people; “people-rule”
Participatory Democracy
Citizens have the power to decide directly on policy and politicians are responsible for implementing them
Pluralist Democracy
No one group dominates politics and organized groups compete to influence policy
Elite Democracy
A small number of people, usually wealthy and educated, influence political decisions
Direct Democracy
Citizens are directly responsible for making policy decisions
Initiative
A process that allows citizens to bypass their state legislature by placing proposed laws on the ballot
Direct Democracy
The citizens directly decide on policies
Popular Referendum
Allows voters to approve or repeal an act of state legislature
Interest groups
Groups of people who attempt to influence policymakers to support their position on a common interest or concern
