Unit 1 Test Flashcards
(35 cards)
Measuring: How many digits do you measure?
You give one more digit than is shown.
what point of liquid do you take as the measurement in a graduated cylinder?
the lowest point (meniscus)
What is Precision?
Its consistency. If the same object is measured multiple times, a precise instrument will give similar results each time.
What is accuracy
How close the instrument, on average, gets to the true value of the object.
What type of phase change is Melting?
solid to liquid
What type of phase change is Freezing?
liquid to solid
What type of phase change is Boiling?
liquid to gas
What type of phase change is Condensation?
gas to liquid
What type of phase change is Sublimation?
solid to gas
What type of phase change is Deposition?
gas to solid
What is the change from solid to liquid called?
melting
What is the change from liquid to solid called?
freezing
What is the change from liquid to gas called?
boiling
What is the change from gas to liquid called?
condensation
What is the change from solid to gas called?
sublimation
What is the change from gas to solid called?
deposition
Why do phase changes occur?
usually due to heating or cooling
What are the three phases (states) of matter?
Solid, Liquid, Gas
What are the particles like in a solid?
They have a rigid structure and definite shape. Particles are locked in place and are closely packed together making it the most dense state of matter.
What are the particles like in a liquid?
Don’t have a rigid structure. Particles move freely past each other Liquid will take the shape of the container its in. Particles are close together so liquids are dense but not compressable.
What are the particles like in a Gas?
No rigid structure and also take shape of container. particles spread out to fill the container. they occupy the volume of what they are given. Low density, Compressible
What is a chemical change?
One where a substance is destroyed and another is created. Chemical bonds are broken and/or formed. Irriversible
What is a physical change?
A change in which no new molecules are made. no chemical bonds are broken or formed. Reversible
Chemical equations
Count how many of each then write: Substance then number below and to the side
ex H204f3 number would go below
