What is Characterization?
The way the authors describe their characters
What is Indirect Characterization?
Leaves hints about the character; requires making inferences
What is Direct Characterization?
Tells the reader exactly what they need to know about the character
Define Inference.
Making a guess based on evidence and reasoning
What does it mean to Symbolize?
To be a symbol of; represent something
What is the 1st Person point of view?
Commonly uses: I, me, my, we, our etc.; narrator in the story
What is the 2nd Person point of view?
Uncommon; uses: you, your, yours; puts reader in the story
What is the 3rd Person point of view?
Most common; uses: she, him, he, her, their, etc.
What is Omniscient in 3rd Person narration?
Narrator knows everyone’s thoughts
What is Limited in 3rd Person narration?
Narrator only knows one persons thoughts
Define Verbal Irony.
Using words to convey a meaning that is opposite of the literal meaning
What are rhetorical devices?
Persuasive language: Ethos, logos, pathos
Define Connotation.
An idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its original literal meaning
What is a Claim?
To state something is the case, normally without providing evidence
What is an Opposing Claim?
An opposing argument; the claim opposite of yours
What does Ethos refer to?
Credibility, ethics, trustworthiness
What does Logos refer to?
Logic, statistics, and proof
What does Pathos refer to?
Empathy, sympathy, and emotions
What is Parallel Structure/Parallelism?
Repeated use of words to show two or more ideas have the same level of importance
