Unit 1 - Tissues, Organs, And Organ Systems Flashcards
(22 cards)
Stem cells in plants are called _____________ cells.
Meristematic
What are tissues?
Tissues are groups of specialized cells that function together to perform specific tasks.
What are the four basic types of animal tissues?
Epithelial
Muscle
Connective
Nervous
What do animal epithelial cells do?
- Form a protective barrier that covers the outer layer of the body (skin)
- Lines body cavities such as the digestive system
- Protection
What do animal connective tissues do?
- Join other tissues together:
- Tendons, ligaments, Bones and cartilage, red and white blood cells, adipose (fat)
What do animal muscle cells do?
Three types: Skeletal (Voluntary) Smooth muscle (Involuntary) Cardiac (Involuntary) Voluntary means you can control them, while involuntary means they move without conscious control (heart beating)
What does animal nervous tissue do?
Creates impulses and transmits them throughout the body
Receive info from inside and outside the body
Sends info to other nerve cells, muscles, or glands
What are the four types of plant tissues?
Meristematic
Epidermal
Ground
Vascular
What do plant meristematic tissues do?
The stem cells of the plants. It divides by mitosis and is found in several locations in a plant.
What do plant epidermal tissues do?
Protects all surfaces of the plant (roots, stem, leaves)
Exchanges water and gases
What do plant Ground tissues do?
Form most of the plant and its functions vary with its location
Roots - store water and food
Leaves - Performs photosynthesis
Stems - Provides strength and support
What do plant vascular tissues do?
Transports materials throughout the plant
Name the parts of the digestive system in order, and name what they do.
Mouth - Grinds food with teeth
Esophagus - Pushes food into the stomach
Stomach - Fluids and muscles digest the food with acids
Small intestines - digestion and absorption of nutrients
Large intestines - absorption of water
ANUS
What organs are in the circulatory system?
Heart, blood, arteries and veins, blood vessels, and capillaries.
What does the circulatory system do?
Pumps oxygen-rich blood through arteries away from the heart and to the body
Takes oxygen-poor blood from the veins and and sends it to the lungs for replenishment
What does the respiratory system do?
Breathing and gas exchange
Removes CO2
What organs are in the respiratory system?
Nose, sinus cavity, trachea, Pharynx, Bronchi, Bronchioles, Diaphragm, Alveoli
What organs are in the nervous system?
Brain, spinal cord, and nerves
What two regions of the body are there for the nervous system?
The Central nervous system (Brain and spinal cord)
The peripheral nervous system (Everything else)
Define homeostasis
Means steady state.
For example:
If your bladder is full, you will need to go to the washroom because theres too much liquid there
When youre hot, you sweat. When youre cold, you shiver
RECAP - What are the functions of the digestive system circulatory system respiratory system nervous system
DS - Break down food and absorb nutrients
CS - Transport oxygen and nutrients around the body
RS - Exchange gases (Oxygen in, Carbon dioxide out)
NS -controls all systems
What are stem cells?
They are unspecialized cells that divide by mitosis, and form specialized cells when exposed to the proper environmental conditions.
