1946 WHO definition of health
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Limitations of WHO definition of health
No reference to spiritual/emotional health well, word complete is unrealistic
Physical h&w
Relates to the functioning of the body and its systems. It includes the physical capacity to perform daily activities or tasks.
Aspects of physical health and well-being
Healthy bodyweight, optimal blood pressure, appropriate levels of fitness, optimal levels of energy, absence of illness, disease, or injury, well functioning body systems and organs, capacity to perform daily tasks
Emotional h&w
Relates to the ability to express feelings in an appropriate way
Aspects of emotional health and well-being
Effectively expressed in managing emotional actions and reactions, experience appropriate emotions and given scenarios, have a high-level of resilience
Mental health and well-being
Is the current state of well-being relating to the mind or brain and includes the ability to think and process information
Aspects of mental health and well-being
Optimal self-esteem, positive Thorpe patterns, high levels of confidence, ability to process information, lower levels of stress and anxiety
Social health and well-being
Relates to the state and quality of the interactions and relationship that an individual has with family, friends, and other people
Aspects of social health and well-being
Supportive network of friends, productive relationships with other people, supportive and well functioning family, effective communication with others, ability to manage or adapt to different social situations appropriately
Spiritual health and well-being
Relates to the ideas, beliefs, values, and ethics that are rise in the mind and conscience of human bangs
Aspects of spiritual health and well-being
Peace and hope, acting according to values and beliefs, developed personal values and beliefs, a sense of belonging and connection to the world

importance of culture - strong connection to culture leads to significantly better self-assessed health status

connection to land - develops spiritual relationship to land which helps explain identity
lack of connection to land leads to poor physical health
Social h&w - relationships between family, individual, and community greatly affect overall physical, mental and spiritual health and wellbeing
Positive family and community relationships affect social and emotional health and wellbeing positively
Health status
an individuals or a populations overall health, taking into account various aspects of life such as life expectancy, amount of disability and levels of disease risk factors
Mortality
The number of deaths in a population in a given time period
Morbidity
Ill health in an individual and levels of ill health within a population.
Rates of hospitalisations
Hospital seperations - episodes of hospital care that start with admission and end at transfer, discharge or death
Chronic conditions - are any disease or condition that lasts a long time (usually longer than 6 months) and usually cant be cured and requires ongoing treatment and management
Core activity limitation examples
Examples:
Self-care - bathing, showering
mobility - moving around away from home
Communication in own language - understanding, being understood by strangers, family
Core activity limitation
When an individual has difficulty or requires assistance with any of the three core activities
Levels of core activity limitation classification
Profound - always needing help
Severe - dont always need help, but may require it sometimes
Moderate - difficulty completing tasks but can achieve
Mild - needs to have an aid to undergo the task
Psychological distress
relates to the unpleasent feelings and emotions that have an impact on an individuals level of functioning
