Health and Wellbeing.
The state of a person’s physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual existence, characterised by an equilibrium in which an the individual feels happy, healthy, capable and engaged.
What is Infirmity?
The quality or state of being weak or ill; often associated with old age.
Physical Health and Wellbeing.
Relates to the state and functioning of the body and its systems; it includes the physical capacity to perform daily activities or tasks.
Emotional Health and Wellbeing.
Relates to the ability to express emotions and feelings in an appropriate way.
Mental Health and Wellbeing.
The current state of wellbeing relating to the mind or brain and the ability to think and process information.
Spiritual Health and Wellbeing.
Relates to ideas, beliefs, values and ethics that arise in the mind and conscience of human beings.
Social Health and Wellbeing
Relates to the state of a person’s interactions with others and includes the quality of relationships with family, friends and others in the community and the ability to manage or adapt appropriately to different social situations.
WHO Prerequisites of Health.
The WHO through the Ottawa Charter states that for the promotion of health and wellbeing prerequisites or basic conditions need to be available.
Peace.
Peace refers to the absence of violence or conflict such as civil or international war, political or social unrest, or riot.
Shelter.
Shelter is a structure that provides protection from the elements and provides a safe place to live for the short or long term.
Education.
Education is the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values and beliefs including reading, writing and health literacy.
Health Literacy.
Health Literacy is when individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information to make appropriate health decisions.
Food.
Food intake is an essential requirement for life and a basic human right.
Food security is when all people are able to obtain nutritionally adequate, culturally appropriate and safe food regularly through local non-emergency sources.
Income.
Income refers to having a regular payment usually for work that is above the poverty line.
A Stable Ecosystem.
A Stable Ecosystem refers to a balanced relationship between landscape and species that live in an environment. It provides many resources for health, including food, air and water and human can influence the health of ecosystem.
Sustainable Resources.
Sustainable Resources relate to ensuring that the resources used to promote health and wellbeing in the present are available for future generations so they too can experience a good quality of life.
Sustainability.
Sustainability is meeting the needs of the present without comprising the ability of future generations meeting their own needs.
Social Justice.
Social Justice is when all people have equal rights for all, regardless of sex, class, and income, ethnicity, age or sexual orientation.
When society is just, all people have the same access to resources and opportunities, including formal education, meaningful and fair pay and employment and adequate shelter.
Equity.
Equity means that those who need the most assistance receive more support.
Self Assessed Health Status.
Self Assessed Health Status provides an overall measure of a population’s health based on a person’s own perception of their health and wellbeing.
Survey participants are asked to classify their health status according to one of five levels which include very good, good, fair and poor.
Health Status.
Health Status is an individual’s or population’s overall level of health and wellbeing taking into account various indicators such as life expectancy, mortality and morbidity.
Indicators.
Indicators are standard statistics that are used to measure and compare health status, such as life expectancy, mortality rates and morbidity.
Three Purposes of Health Status Indicators.
Monitor trends - Increases and decreases.
Preventative measures to address health concerns.
Evaluate the preventative measures.
Life Expectancy.
Life Expectancy an indication of how long a person can live. It is the number of years of life remaining to a person at a particular age on average, if death rates do not change.
