Unit 1 Vocab Flashcards
(38 cards)
Controlled experiment
Is under controlled conditions and has to two groups; control group and experimental group
Hypothesis
Testable explanation of a situation
Independent variable
The one factor that can be changed in a controlled experiment; is the factor tested and affects the experiments outcome
Herbivores
Eat plants
Omnivore
Eat both plants and animals
Dependent variable
Factor being measured in a controlled experiment; it’s value changes because of changes to the independent variable
Respiration
Action of breathing
Digestion
Action of breaking down food
Metabolism
All of the chemical reactions that occur within an organism
Abiogenesis
Study of how life originally arose on this planet
Biogenesis
Process in which life forms arise for similar life forms
Producer
An organism that collects energy from sunlight or inorganic substances to produce food.
Consumer
Organism that gets its energy requirements by consuming other organisms.
Technology
Application of knowledge gained from scientific research to solve society’s needs and problems and improve the quality of life
Data
Quantitive and qualitative info gained from scientific investigation
Experiment
Procedure preformed in a controlled setting to test a hypothesis and collect precise data
Scientific method
Problem solving methods that might include observations, forming a hypothesis, experimenting, gathering and analyzing data and drawing conclusions
Adaptation
Inherited characteristic of a species that develops over time in response to an environmental factor, enabling the species to survive
Autotroph
Organism that captures energy from sunlight or inorganic substances to produce its own good, provides the foundation of the food supply for other organisms, ALSO CALLED A PRODUCER!
Cell theory
1- organisms are made of one or more cells
2- cells are the basic unit of life
3- all cells come from other cells
Cell
Basic unit of structure and organization of all living organisms
Organism
Anything that has or once had all the characteristics of life
Photosynthesis
Two phase anabolic pathway in which the suns light energy is converted to chemical energy for use by the cell
Response
Organisms reaction to a stimulus
