Numerical Expression
Consists of numbers and operations.
Variable
A letter used to represent one or more number.
Variable Expression
Consists of numbers, operations, and variables.
Evaluate a Variable Expression
Substitute a number for each variable and evaluate the resulting numeral expression.
Verbal Model
Descibes a problem using words as tables and using math symbols to relate the words.
Power
The result of a repeated multiplication of the same factor.
Base
The number or the variable that is used as a factor in repeated multiplication.
Exponet
The number that reepresents the number of times the base is used as a factor.
Formula
Describes the relationship between quantities.
Order of Operations
The rules established to evaluate an expression involving more than one operation. Perentheses Exponents Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction
Grouping Symbols
Indicate operations that should be performed first. Parentheses ( ) Brackets [ ] and fraction bars are common grouping symbols.
Integers
Numbers such as -3;-2;-1;0;1;2;3;4
Negative Integers
Integers that are less than zero.
Positive Integers
Integers that are greater than zero.
Absolute Value
The absolute value of a number is its distance from zero on a number line. The absolute value of a number is written as lal
Opposites
Two numbers are opposites if they have the same absolute value, but different signs. (5; -5)
Additive Inverse
The opposite of a number can also be called its additive inverse.
Additive Inverse Property
The sum of a number and its opposite is zero.
Coordinate Plane
A coordinate plane is formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line and a vertical number line.
X-Axis
The horizontal axis in a coordinate plane.
Y-Axis
The vertical axis in a coordinate plane.
Origin
The point (0,0) in a coordinate plane at which the horizontal axis intersects the vertical axis.
Quadrant
One of the four parts into which the axis divide the coordinate plane.
Ordered Pair
Each point in the coordinate plane corresponds to an ordered pair of real numbers.
