unit 10 Flashcards
organism
an individual animal, plant, or single celled life form
population
all organism of one species in an area
community
all of the living organism (populations) in a area
ecosystem
all biotic and abiotic factors in an area
biome
major region characterized by specific plants, animals, and climate
biosphere
all areas of the earth that can sustain life
What kind of organism makes up the base of all 3 pyramids?
producers/autotrophs
what biomass?
the total mass of organisms in a given area or volume
why is only abt 10% of the energy in one level available to the next level
the rest is lost as heat and work when organisms use energy to live
If an ecosystem were to have more primary consumers than producers, what would happen?
The population of producers would decrease and less energy would be transferred to the consumers
tree
producer
squirrel eating a nut
consumer
Bacteria changing dead plant into nutrients
decomposer
human eating lettuce
comsumer
tomato plant
producer
fungus growing in decaying matter
decomposer
cricket eating grass
consumer
Name four potential limiting factors for a population:
Amount of food/water, space/territory, predators, disease, natural disasters
What are the three biogeochemical cycles we learned about?
Water, Carbon, Nitrogen
How are humans disrupting the carbon cycle?
By adding more/large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere than what would happen naturally
What would happen to the carbon cycle if all plants ceased to exist?
The oxygen-carbon cycle would then be broken/significantly limited
Cleaner Fish and Shark: The cleaner fish feeds on parasites in the shark’s mouth and gills.
Interaction
mutulism
Tick and Cow: The tick burrows into the cow’s skin to suck blood.
prarasitism
Tigers and Golden Jackals: Lone golden jackals often follow tigers to feed on the tiger’s kills once the tiger has finished eating.
commensalism
