What was the Little Rock Nine?

A

A high school in Arkansas was ordered by a judge to integrate but the Arkansas gov ordered the Arkansas National Guard to stop the 9 black students from entering the school for 3 weeks. Eisenhower called in paratroopers to enforce the integration.

What was the Montgomery Bus Boycott?

A

Rosa Parks was arrested and fined for not giving up her seat on a bus. On her hearing, people from all over Alabama boycotted the busses, costing the bus company a lot of money. Lasted 381 days.

  • Gideon v. Wainwright: if a person cannot afford an attorney the state must provide one
  • Miranda v. Arizona: before being placed in police custody, suspect must be informed of their civil rights
  • Tinker v. Des Moines School District: reinforced freedom of speech
