What was the civil rights movement?
movement to end racial discrimination
What was segregation like in the north?
weren’t really segregation laws but the races generally didn’t mix
What was segregation like in the south?
segregation was strictly and legally enforced
Who was Thurgood Marshall?
the legal council for the NAACP; based his strategy on the 14th Amendment
Who was Jackie Robinson?
In 1947, he was the first black person called up to the big leagues
and was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was named rookie of the year.
When was the military desegregated?
1948
What was the first war that took place with a desegregated American military?
Korean War
What was Brown vs. Board of Education?
The parents of a young black girl named Linda Brown sued the district because she could not attend the closer white school due to her race
What victory came out of the Brown v Board of Education case?
Integration of public schools
What was the Little Rock Nine?
A high school in Arkansas was ordered by a judge to integrate but the Arkansas gov ordered the Arkansas National Guard to stop the 9 black students from entering the school for 3 weeks. Eisenhower called in paratroopers to enforce the integration.
What was the Montgomery Bus Boycott?
Rosa Parks was arrested and fined for not giving up her seat on a bus. On her hearing, people from all over Alabama boycotted the busses, costing the bus company a lot of money. Lasted 381 days.
What victory came out of the Montgomery Bus Boycott?
Bus segregation laws were deemed unconstitutional
Who was Martin Luther King Jr?
Jan 15, 1929 - April 4, 1968. Became a baptist pastor in 1954. Became famous during Mont. Bus Boycott and arrested in 1955. Encouraged people to peacefully fight for equality.
What was the Warren Court?
Earl Warren was appt. cheif justice to the Supreme Court in 1953. He viewed constitution flexibly.
What were some key cases in the Warren Court?
- Mapp v. Ohio: decided that evidence from an illegal search cannot be used in a criminal trial
- Gideon v. Wainwright: if a person cannot afford an attorney the state must provide one
- Miranda v. Arizona: before being placed in police custody, suspect must be informed of their civil rights
- Tinker v. Des Moines School District: reinforced freedom of speech
How did JFK spend the early days of his presidency?
working on economic reforms to help the impoverished
Which two presidents helped pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964?
JFK started the push to get it passed and LBJ signed it.
Who was Lyndon B Johnson?
1908-1973. taught in a primarily Mexican school in his youth which fueled his desire to help the poor and oppressed. Elected to the Senate in 1948 and served as JFK’s vice
What did the Civil Rights Act of 1964 do?
Ended segregation in public places and public schools, established the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and allowed the government to enforce the laws
What did the Voting Rights Act of 1965 do?
federally protected all people’s right to vote
What was the “Great Society”?
A plan to correct social and economic inequalities.
What did the Great Society establish?
- Medicare and Medicaid
- Funding for public schools and environmental protection agencies
- Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Transportation
What was the Southern Christian Leadership Confrence?
A group formed by MLK and other African American Christian leaders who’s goal was equality through nonviolent civil disobedience
What did the SCLC help do?
shift the movement leadership from Northerners to Southern church leaders
