define soliloquy
a speech in which a character speaks his or her thoughts aloud. usually on stage alone.
define Dialogue
written conversation between two or more characters. set off with quotation marks
define aside
a short speech directed to the audience, or another character, that is not heard by the other characters on stage
define verbal irony
when someone knowingly exaggerates or says one thing and means another
define situational irony
a contrast between what a reader or character expects and what actually exists or happens.
define dramatic irony
where the reader or viewer knows something the character does not know.
define paradox
a seemingly contradictory or absurd statement that may nonetheless suggest an important truth.
define foreshadowing
is a writers use of hints or clues to suggest events that will occur later in a story.
define flashback
is an account of a conversation, an episode or an event that happened before the beginning of a story
define mood
mood is the feeling or atmosphere that a writer creates for a reader
define allusion
is an indirect reference to a famous person, place, event or literary work.
define idiom
is a common figure of speech shine meaning is different from the literal meaning of its words. (e.g. it’s raining cats and dogs)
define pun
a joke that comes from a play on words
define blank verse
is unrhymed poetry written in iambic pentameter.
define iambic pentameter
a metrical pattern of five feet, or units, each of which is made up of two syllables, the first unstressed and the second stressed.
define tragedy
is a dramatic work that presents the downfall of a dignified character or characters who are involved in historically or socially significant events

is the main character in a work of literature.
define Antagonist
is a principal character or force in opposition to the protagonist.
define Character Foil
is a character who provides a striking contrast to another character.
define comic relief
consists of humorous scenes, incident, or speeches that are included in a serious drama to provide a reduction in emotional intensity.
