What do the Police do?

A
  • The police are responsible for the following tasks: investigating crime, gathering evidence, questioning witnesses and suspects and enforcing the law within society.

What are the CPS?

A
  • The CPS have really important job, they review all evidence to ensure that cases are viable for court and have the right and enough evidence.
  • As well as this, they can also present evidence in court.

What are the Prison and Probation services?

A
  • These services carry out the sentences that offenders receive in court.
  • They enforce the law and play a part in the rehabilitation of offenders to reduce reoffending.
  • Prison is where custodial sentences are carried out and officers supervise the offenders.
  • The National Probation Service supervise offenders who who have non-custodial sentences such as: community work or people who are released from prison on licence.

What are the HM Courts?

A
  • Magistrates courts deal with less serious offences, while the crown court deals with more serious crimes and include trials by Judge and Jury.

Describe the different relationships between the CPS and other agencies.

A
  • Courts- They prepare and present prosecution cases in courts as well as preparing appeals to sentences deemed as unsatisfactory or too lenient.
  • Police- They advise the police on lines of enquiry, evidence collection and what to charge suspects with.

Describe the different relationships between the Government Departments and other agencies.

A
  • Courts/Prison/Probation services- The Ministry of Justice is responsible for the running of Courts, Prison services and Probation services, Tax money funds these organisations.
  • Police- The Home office work with police forces to identify the priorities in different areas. Tax money is used by the Home office to fund the police.

Describe the different relationships between the Courts and Tribunal services and other agencies.

A
  • Courts/Judges- Judges help to ensure the smooth running and order of the courts and Tribunal services.
    -Prison service- The prison service transfers offenders to and from prison to court as well as assisting in planning meetings, video links and interviews.

  • Courts- They supervise offenders who are sentenced to community court as well as supervising drug testing if the court requests it.
  • Prison/Parole board- Parole boards and Probation officers supervise offenders who have been released from prison on licence.

Describe the different relationships between the HM Prison Service and other agencies.

  • Courts- Work with Prison services to facilitate legal visits with offenders and carry out custodial sentences.
  • Police- They co-ordinate interviews and video links between prison and the courts.
  • National Probation Service (NPS)- Deals with offenders who will or have been released from prison on a licence.

Describe the different relationships between the Police and other agencies.

A
  • Courts- Police give evidence as a prosecution witness, protect vulnerable witnesses and transport offenders.
  • CPS- Police charge offenders in line with the CPS’ instructions. They also gather evidence for the CPS.
  • Prison/Probation services- They arrest anyone who breached their license and they help to manage child sex offenders in their local areas.
