Medical Model
An approach to understanding psychological disorders that views them as illnesses or diseases.
Rosenhan Experiment
A study designed to investigate the validity of psychiatric diagnoses (Ex: If someone actually has a mental illness or not).
Deinstitutionalization
The process of replacing long-stay psychiatric hospitals with less isolated community mental health services.
Insanity Plea
A legal defense used to claim a defendant was not responsible for their actions at the time of a crime due to a mental disorder.
McNaughton’s Rule
The rule that defines insanity, stating that if the defendant was not in control of their actions while committing the crime and does not know that their actions are unjust, they are fit to be let go under insanity.
