Epistemology – How Do We Know Things? (10 cards)
Epistemology
It is the theory of knowledge, exploring its nature, sources, and limits. It is the study of knowledge and its associated concepts, such as truth and justification.
What is Knowledge?-Definition
What does it mean to “know” something? What distinguishes knowledge from belief or opinion?
What is Knowledge?-Allegory of the Cave
A thought experiment illustrating our perception of reality. It questions whether what we perceive is truly real or merely a shadow of a greater truth. It makes us wonder: how much of what we believe is just what we’ve been shown, and what lies beyond our limited understanding?
What is Knowledge?-Propositional Knowledge
“Knowing that” something is true (e.g., “I know that the sky is blue”).
What is Knowledge?-Procedural Knowledge
“Knowing how” to do something (e.g., “I know how to ride a bike”).
What is Knowledge?-Knowledge by Acquaintance
“Knowing of” a person or place through direct experience.
What is Knowledge?-Justification
What evidence or reasons support our beliefs? How do we justify our claims to knowledge?
What is Knowledge?-Truth
What is truth? How do we determine if a belief is true? (through Justified True Belief)
