Unit 2 Flashcards
(37 cards)
Define aqueous
Dissolved in water
What are 4 solubility rules
Alkali metals are soluble
Hydrogen is soluble
Ammonium is soluble
Nitrate is soluble
What must occur in the product for a reaction to take place
A solid, liquid or gas must be produced
Out of Na2CO3 CaS Fe(NO3)3 PbCl2 Which are soluble
Na2CO3
CaS
Fe(NO3)3
When making ionic equations when do you not split a compound
When it is a solid liquid or gas
What kind of equation produces a double displacement that has water on the product side
Acid + hydroxide = a double displacement with water
What is the overall reaction for a dd that produces a gas
Acid + carbonate -> carbon dioxide + water + salt
In dd what is the overall reaction for producing a ammonia gas
Ammonium compound + hydroxide compound -> ammonia + water + salt
What should you consult before writing a sd reaction?
Activity series
SD: what is the product of a metal and acid reaction
Metal goes with the other element (not H) in the back for example H gets divided from HCl + Zn and Cl is added behind Zn
SD: what happens when a metal and water and metal react
Reactants must be metal and water which produces the metal and hydroxide compound and H
K + H2O -> KOH + H2
SD: halogen + metal halide produces what and what do you have to remeber
Refer to halogen activity series
Switch the compound front to the lone element remeber diatomics
Cl2 + KI -> KCl + I
Why are water pipes made of copper or plastic preferred to steel pipes? (2)
- water and plastic do not corrode
- steel pipes have Zn lining which corrodes and causes the steel and water to come in direct contact causing leaks and more corrosion
What are some medical uses of titanium and why do they use titanium? (4)
- light weight and anti corrosive
- used for knee and hip replacements
- used for pins and rods for broken bones
- used in dentistry for tooth replacement
What is a practical application for alkali metals?
Why are they dangerous?
How can they be used/stored more safely? (4)
- very reactive using hydrogen to make fuel
- react well with water and oxygen making them hazardous to handle
- often kept in liquid ammonium of silica powder to make for easier handling
- alkalis are used in many chemical reactions
Which elements are diatomic
H O F Br I N Cl
Should you store cobalt (III) nitrate in aluminum jar
No.
Cobalt (III) Nitrate eats through aluminium causing corrosion and brown crust
SYN: metal oxide + water produces?
Looks dd w/ water reactant
Metal hydroxide
MgO + H2O -> Mg(OH)2
SYN: non metal oxide + water produces?
A H acid
SO3 + H2O -> H2SO4
Natural rain is not neutral what causes acid rain?
CO2 dissolves in water in the atmosphere and reacts with the water to produce acid rain
CO2(g) + H2O3(aq)
If a base spills what should you do and vice versa
Put a acid on it
Put a base on it
What grows best in basic to neutral soil
Celery and carrots
What grows better in acidic soil
Strawberries and tomatoes
What can you do to change soil levels
Want less base add more acid
want more acid add more base
