Unit 2 Flashcards
(22 cards)
Osteocytes
Bone maintaining cells
Extra cellular matrix
Collagen (protein fibers) hardened by calcium
2 types of bone tissue:
- compact bone
- spongy bone
Compact bone: (the outer shell of all bone) tightly packed osteoblasts that run longitudinally within the bone GOOD FOR SUPPORTING
Spongy bone: (found at the heads of long boats and fills most of irregular bones) it consists of a lattice of thing threads of bone called trabeculae MAKES THE BONE LIGHTWEIGHT
3 parts of a long bone:
- Epiphysis (ENDS of the bone)
- articular cartilage (smooth surface where 2 bones meet) - Diaphysis (SHAFT of the bone)
- compact bone (support) - Periosteum
- covering around a bone
3 parts of the vertebral column:
- Cervical (7)
- Thoracic (12)
- Lumbar (5)
The top 2 bones of the vertebral column
Atlas
Axis
A rounded process that articulated with another bone
Condyle
Example: occipital condyle
A projection situated above a condyle
Epicondyle (medial epicondyle of humerus)
An opening for the passage of b.v. &/or nerves
Forsaken (ex: foramen magnum)
An enlargement at the end of a bone
Head
Femoral head
A prominent projection of a bone
Process (lateral process of vertebrae)
A sharp projection
Spine
Ex: spine of scapula
A relatively large process
Trochanter
Ex: greater trochanter of femur
A small knob-like process
Tubercle (ex: tubercle of rib)
A knob-like process larger than a tubercle
Tuberosity (ex: tibial tuberosity)
Superior
Up! (The forehead is superior to the nose)
Inferior
DOWN! (The navel is inferior to the breastbone)
Anterior of Vertral
Toward the front of the body
The breastbone is antiretroviral to the spine
Posterior or Dorsal
Towards the back of the body
The heart is posterior to the breastbone
Medial
Toward the MIDDLE of the body
The heart is medial to the arm
Lateral
AWAY from the MIDDLE of the body
The arms are lateral to the chest
Intermediate
Between a medial and a lateral structure
The armpit is intermediate between the breastbone and shoulder
