Unit 2 Flashcards
Functions of the medulla
Has autonomic centers that regulate breathing, blood pressure; direct swallowing, coughing, vomiting reflexes
Functions of the pons
Relays data from hemispheres to cerebellum
Works with medulla to maintain balance/posture, breathing
Functions of midbrain
Participates in eye movement control
Has relay nuclei of auditory & visual systems
Functions of cerebellum
Coordinates planning/execution of full body movement, balance/posture
Also coordinates head/eye movements
Integration of sensory/motor data
- sensory data about position from spinal cord
- sensory data about balance from vestibular organs
- motor data from cerebral cortex
Functions of thalamus
Processes almost all sensory data sent to cerebral cortex
Process almost all motor data sent from cerebral cortex to brain and spinal cord
Functions of hypothalamus
Has centers to regulate body temp, hunger, water balance
Endocrine gland, controls pituitary hormone secretion
Secretes releasing and release-inhibiting hormones into hypophysial portal blood to affect anterior pituitary
Has neuronal cell bodies of posterior pituitary which secrete ADH & oxytocin
Functions of cerebral hemispheres
Perceptions
Higher motor functions
Cognition
Memory
Emotion
Function of basal ganglia
Chooses which action to perform at the moment
Functions of amygdala
Emotion
Functions of hippocampus
Memory
Functions of cerebrospinal fluid
Provides constant, controlled environment for brain cells
Protects brain from endogenous/exogenous toxins
Prevents local neurotransmitter escape to circulation
Allows lipid-soluble solutes to permeate
Inhibits passage of non-lipid-soluble solutes
