When would one perform a hernia exam for a man?
Complete annual/sports physical
Any Hx of symptoms or trauma
What is a hernia?
Movement or protrusion of tissue through a separation of tissue
What is the difference between a direct and indirect hernia?
Direct - Hernia through torn tissue (usually abdominal muscles)
Indirect - Hernia through inguinal ring
Prostate exams are suggested for all men over the age of?
40 yoa
What are the grades of prostatitis?
Grade I - soft, moldable, no identifiable sulcus; benign
Grade II - mass under capsule, disappearance of sulcus; 25% malignant
Grade III - extracapsular mass, hardening; malignant
Grade IV - calcific, rough, dense masses over entire prostate; most likely metastasized to elsewhere
What is the correct order in which one should perform the abdominal exam?
Inspection
Auscultation

What should one do to determine whether an abdominal mass is superficial or deep?
Have pt contract abdominal muscles; if deep, the mass will disappear
