Unit 2 biological basis & behavior Flashcards
(33 cards)
Nerve cells that produce communication throughout the body
Neuron
Receive communication from other cells
Dendrites
Produce proteins which keep neuron alive
Soma
Contains genetic materials
Nucleus
Long fiber transmits outgoing messages
Axon
Layer of fatty, insulated tissue which helps speed up neural inpulses
Myelin sheath
Contain neurotransmitters which send messages across the synapse to other neurons
Terminal Buttons
Carry messages from other organs to spinal cord/brain
Sensory
Carry messages from spinal cord/brain to muscles and glands
Motor
Carry messages from one neuron to another
Interneurons
The space in between neurons where communication is accomplished
Synapse
Chemicals released by the terminal buttons that travel across the synapse that enable neurons to communicate
Neurotransmitters
Controls vital life functions- heart rate, blood pressure, breathing
Medulla Oblongata
Regulates sleep, consciousness, facil expressions, and sensory processes
Pons
Located at the back of the head; responsible for muscle coordination and balances
Cerebellum
Regulates emotions such as aggression, fear, and jealousy, trigger fight or flight
Amygdala
Regulates body temperature, hunger, thrist, and sexusal behavior
Hypothalamus
Responsible for the functions of new long term memories
Hippocampus
“Bark”, controls higher brain functions such as information processing
Cerebral cortex
Thick bundle of nerve fibers that connect both hemisphere
Corpus collosum
Speaking, judgement & reasoning, planning, and personality, located behind the forehead
Frontal lobe
Top of brain, make sense of things we touch
Parietal lobe
Located above the ears, processing auditory information
Temporal lobe
Locates at back of head, recives and process visual information
Occipital lobe
