Define deviance
Deviance refers to any behaviour that goes against society’s norms but is not against the law.
An example of deviant behaviour
Swearing, adultery
What sanction does deviant behaviour receive?
Informal sanctions such as rejection from peers, ridicule by peers, being frowned upon
Define criminality
An act that is against the law
What are morals?
Good ways of behaving
An example of criminal behaviour
Murder, theft
What sanction does criminality recieve?
Formal sanctions such as a custodial sentences, fines or cautions
