Unit 2 Force Flashcards
(23 cards)
Force
push or pull an object has on another
net force
the combining of forces when 2 or more forces act on an object
inertia
unchanging motion unless acted on by an outside force
friction
when two objects are in contact with each other
3 types of friction
- static: force between 2 objects that are not moving
2: sliding: force between 2 objects that are sliding past each other
3.: rolling: the force between a rolling object and the surface it is rolling on
balanced forces
forces that are equal in size and opposite in direction
unbalanced forces
forces that are NOT equal in size and opposite in direction
example of newtons first law
a seat belt because the motion of your body wants to keep moving forward but the seat belt stops it
example of newtons second law
kicking a soccer ball
example of newtons third law
jumping on a trampoline
air resistance
resistance an object feels when travelling through the air
what does the size of gravitational force depend on
the greater the mass the greater the attraction
what is the difference between mass and weight
mass: amount of matter
weight: force of gravity on an object
Law of Universal Gravitation
any two masses exert an attractive force on each other
law of conservation momentum
momentum is never created or destroyed it is simply transferred
factors that affect inertia and momentum
inertia: more mass more inertia
momentum: mass and velocity
formula and law for force
F=ma
2nd law
formula and law for momentum
p=mv
3rd law
units for velocity
m/s
units for momentum
kg*m/s
units for force
N (newtons)
gravity unit
9.8m/s
fastest a person can go when falling
55 m/s
