What is Internet security?
A branch of computer security related to the Internet whose objective is to establish rules and measure to use against attacks over the Internet.
What are the online threats?
Phishing, email spoofing, chat spoofing.
How to keep strong passwords?
- 12-14 characters
- avoid passwords based on repetition, dictionary words, pet names, etc.
- numbers and symbols
- capital and lower-case letters
- avoid same passwords for multiple sites
- avoid using something that people know you strongly like or dislike

Backup your data
Keep copy of personal data in additional media and keep away from unauthorised users.
Use encryption software
Usually available within the operating system to protect data from unauthorised users.

Read the privacy statement or policy when registering.
Do not share personal information
Be cautious when filling out forms online and research if the website is safe and trustable. Think twice before providing your email.

Use antivirus and anti spyware software
Malware attacks the computer and tracks growing behavious or transmit personal data from the computer. Key loggers could send your keystrokes to unauthorised users. These softwares offer real-time protection. Keep the up to date to protect from recent threats.
Do not immediately respond to mails from unknown users
It may be a fake email trying to gather personal info and compromise the user. Sometimes virus or dangerous scripts could be attached to the mail- NEVER open them.
Clear browser cookies frequently
Cookies are programs that are created on your local computer when you visit websites. They are meant for storing data based on your activity performed during your earlier visits, but they could be tracked by unauthorised users and gain access to personal info.
Keep operating system updated
Sometimes they may have security holes through which a hacker can take advantage. Visit the vendor’s website to check for updates.
Install firewalls
They could be hardware or software and keep computer and network secure. They analyse the network traffic and decide if the traffic should be allowed or not. More OS include firewall software as part of OS. Sometimes you may need to configure your firewall for additional security.
