when a member of the Senate stands on the floor as long as possible in order to keep Senate from voting on a bill

This is probably one of the most hiliarious parts of american government

Fun facts:
* the longest filibuster was made by Republican Strom Thurmand: 24 hours and 18 minutes in length, in opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1957
* former senator Ted Cruz read Green Eggs and Ham during his 21+ hour filibuster
