Nation
A group of people that share a territory, identity, and a sense of unity (aka society)
State
A political boundary
Nation-state
When a nation and a state occupy the same territory
Stateless nation
Nation without an official state with boundaries
Ex: Cherokee nation
Democracy
- Citizens have power
- 2 kinds: direct and representative
Monarchy
- Power runs down family line
- king and queen
Dictatorship
- Individual or group has all the power
- power can be obtained by force
- human rights usually violated
Communism
All political power and economic control is held by the government
Land locked
No access to an ocean, another country on each border
Artificial boundary
- no physical barrier
- people created it
- nothing physically there to show it
Natural boundary
Earth-made
Ex. Mountains, rivers, etc.
Economy
Has to do with goods, services, and money
Infrastructure
Support system
Economic system
How goods and services are exchanged
Market economy
Aka free enterprise
- supply and demand
- competition
- limited government interference
- commercial farming and industry
Command economy
Aka communism
- all government controlled
- lack of incentive
Natural resources
Earth made things the people sell
-renewable, nonrenewable, inexhaustible
Per capita
total income divided by total population
GNP
Gross national product- how much money a country make internationally
GDP
Gross domestic product- how much money a country makes within its own borders
