what is social inequality
occurs when resources within a society are distributed unevenly
what is equality
the state of being equal or the same as others (status, rights, value, and opportunities) equally means each incisional or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities
what is equity
the quality of being fair and impartial
recognizes that each person has diffferent circumstances and gives them the opportunities and resources need to reach an equal outcome
what is justice
the quality of being fair and the principle of doing what is right
it is the ethical idea that people are to be treated fairly
what is discrimination
the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially in the grounds of ethnicity, age, sex, gender, sexual orientation, or ability
what is morality
a particular system of values and principles of conduct concerning distinction between right and wrong behaviour
what is human dignity
-we have the right to whatever we genuinely need in order to become full human beings
-value of the human person and the right to have that value respected
what is stewardship
caring for all God has made
what is preferential option for the poor
-God’s special closeness with the poor
-a call to share and follow God’s example
-Jesus said that solidarity with the poor is solidarity with God

-all the social conditions that allow us to reach our fulfillment more fully and easily

we are called to protect the basic rights of all workers

-we have the right and responsibility to be involved in the institutions which govern our lives

-we must protect the rights of all people

we are called to support the family so that we can participate in society, build a community spirit, and promote the well being of all

what is charity
private individual acts, responds to immediate need, provides direct service, required repeated actions, directed at effects of injustice (symptoms)
what is justice
public group actions, responds to long-term needs, promotes change in institutions, resolves structural injustices, directed at root of injustice
what is difference between charity and justice
-charity is private individual acts and justice is public group actions
-charity responds to immediate needs and justice responds to long term needs
-justice is directed at the root cause of injustice and charity id directed at the effects
what is power
our ability to act on the world and to interact with other people in a way that achieves results in
where is power found

what is the grey area
our use of power may drift from being positive to negative
how do you distinguish power from authority
-authority adds to power
(i may have power to do something but not necessarily the authority)
-in other for power to be effective others need to accept it
what is legitimate authority
-it comes from God
-only refuse to obey legit authority is when it demands we do something wrong
-when we help those in authority we serve god
when is authority legitimate
1) it is recognized by the population as a whole
2) when it serves the common good
