Why did Canada face a conscription crisis during World War I?

A

– Borden saw horrific trenches, and wanted it to come to the end
– Soldiers were needed to replace lost ones
– Horrifying stories returned about the war
– French didn’t wanna fight, pacifist
didn’t believe in war
– Farmers didn’t want to lose workers and crops

– First time, Canadians fought as one Canadian Corp.

How was the war fought in air? What impact did it have on the war?
Fought of a style called dog fight. You would try to out maneuver your enemy to get behind them to shoot their tail end, shoot at short burst close range. Keep back to the sun. Given gun if plane was on fire, gave the soldiers extra Intel more strategic bombing helped protect your own troops having a birds iview.

– Greater voice on a global stage – Population grew like crazy – Woman joined Workforce, country took on debt – Loss of 61,000 lives, 172,000 wounded

Who were the enemies at home? How were they treated?
– Pacifist (Mennonite) oppose war on religious grounds – Immigrants (Ukrainians, Germans, Polish, etc.) Newspapers were censored or banned, businesses closed many loss jobs, riots took place, Interment camps, put in jail or harassed

What was the Halifax explosion?
– Ship carrying 2400 tons of explosives collided with another ship – Shipped drifted closer to shore and exploded, noise broke up to 100 km of windows – Biggest non-atomic explosion in history – 1600 Canadians killed and 9000 injured – Relief came in, 30 million was raised, help was sent from Boston and surrounding area
