Maslow’s Heirachy of Needs
This theory requires that managers understand where each worker is situated according to a hierarchy of needs in order to try to satisfy employee needs appropriately.
Assumes series of steps, each taking the person to a position where their higher order needs are satisfied (needs must be met in sequence)
Components of Maslow’s Heirachy of Needs
Physiological needs => Basic biological needs (e.g. working conditions)
Safety needs => Security, stability & protection from harm (e.g. job security)
Social needs => Strong relationships & sense of community (e.g. Supportive management)
Esteem needs => Self esteem, respect & recognition (e.g. promotion & awards)
Self-Actualisation needs => Personal growth, reaching potential (e.g. opportunities & job development)

- Career Advancement (long term)
- Investment in Training (short/long term)
- Support (short term)
- Sanction (short term)
