What is Physical H&W?
Relates to the functioning of the body and its systems; it includes the physical capacity to perform daily activities or tasks.
What is Social H&W?
Relates to the ability to form meaningful and satisfying relationships with others and the ability to manage or adapt appropriately to different social situations.
What is Emotional H&W?
Relates to the ability to express emotions and feelings in a positive way. Emotional health is about positive management and expression of emotional actions and reactions as well as the ability to display resilience.
What is Mental H&W?
Is the current state of the mind or brain and it relates to the ability to think and process information.
What is Spiritual H&W?
Relates to ideas, beliefs, values and ethics that arise in the minds and conscience of human beings
It includes a sense of meaning or value, and reflection on your place in the world.

WHO Definition of Health 1948
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease.
WHO Definition with clarification
(Ottawa Charter 1986)
To reach a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, an individual or group must be able to identify and to realize aspirations, to satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the environment. Health is, therefore, seen as a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.
Optimal health and wellbeing
The highest level of health an individual can achieve given their potential, including a balance between all dimensions of health
Illness
The experience of being in a state of poor health, usually due to the presence of disease or injury.
Disease
Is a dynamic state, and refers to injury, condition or infection experienced by a person.
Subjective
Experiences based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.
Dynamic
Of a process or system characterized by constant change, activity, or progress.
Life Expectancy
the number of years of life on average remaining to an individual at a particular if death rates do not change. the most commonly used measure is life expences at birth.
Health-Adjusted Life Expectancy
the average length of time an individual at a specific age can expect to live in full health that is time lived without the health consequences of disease or injury.
Self-Assessed Health Status
‘an individual’s own opinion about how they feel about their health their state of mind and their life in general
Mortality
the number of deaths in a population in a given period
Morbidity
ill health in a individual and levels of ill health within a population (often expressed through incidence prevalence )
Incidence
the number/rate of new cases of a disease or condition in a population during a given period
Prevalence
the number/rate of cases of a particular disease or condition present in a population at a given time
Burden Of Disease
ill health in an individual and levels of ill health within a population ( often expressed through incidence prevalence)
Measured in DALY
Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALY)
1 DALY equals one year of healthy life lost due to premature death and time lived with illness, disease, or injury.
Years Of Life Lost (YLL)
A measure of how many years of expected life are lost due to premature death
