Unit 3 -bio 10 Flashcards
Vocab Studing (36 cards)
Abiogenesis
technical term for spontaneous generation.
Active Transport
the movement of ions or molecules across a cellular membrane from a lower to a higher concentration, requiring the consumption of energy.
Adhesion
The tendency of water molecules to dtick to certain surfaces
Auxin
The plant growth hormone produced in plant tips
Biogenesis
the production of living organisms from other living organisms. (Living things come from living things)
Cell Theory
- All organisms are composed of one or more cells
- The cell is the smallest functional of life
- All cells are produced from other cells
Chloroplasts
An organelle containing chlorophyll, where photosynthesis takes place.
Cohesion
The tendency of water molecules to stick to other water molecules
Compound Light Microscope
A microscope with two or more lenses that is used to veiw objects illuminated by visible light
Concentration Gradient
The difference in concentrations of a substance between two areas.
Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope
laser beam is directed at various planes of the specimen, producing a series of 2D images that can be stacked to produce a 3D image
Electron Microscope
an extremely powerful microscope that forms an enlarged imagine of specimens using a beam of electrons instead of a beam of light
EndoplasmicReticulum (ER)
a network of tubular membranes within the cytoplasm of the cell, occurring either with a smooth surface (smooth endoplasmic reticulum) or studded with ribosomes (rough endoplasmic reticulum) involved in the transport of materials.
Facilitated Diffusion
in cell biology, a process by which substances are transported across cell membranes by means of protein carrier molecules; also called facilitated transport
Fluid-mosiac Model
A model of membrane structure that suggests that the molecules that make up membranes can move relative to each other in the 2D of the membrane
Golgi Apparatus
The organelle where protiens and lipids from the endoplasmic reticulum are modified, repackaged, and distributed to other locations in the cell
Guard Cells
either of two specialized epidermal cells that flank the pore of a stoma and usually cause it to open and close.
Gravitropism
Gravitropism is a turning or growth movement by a plant, fungus, or animal in response to gravity.
Hydrophilic
Attracted to water
Hydrophobic
Repelled by water
Hypertonic
Having a higher concentration of solute
Hypotonic
Having a lower concentration of solute
Isotonic
Having a same concentration of solutes
Mitochondria
The organelle where food molecules are broken down into energy tat can be used by the cell
