Unit 3 List 1 - macromolecule Flashcards
Macro molecule
a very large molecule, often a polymer, composed of thousands of covantely bonded atoms
Organic
study of the structure, properties, and reactions of organic compounds and organic materials
Monomer
a molecule of any of a class of compounds, mostly organic, that can react with other molecules to form very large molecules, or polymers
polymer
a large molecule composed of repeating structural units
carbohydrates
organic molecules composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen
lipids
fatty, waxy, or oily compounds that are soluble in organic solvents and insoluble in polar solvents such as water
fatty acids
building blocks of lipids, acting as structural components of cell membranes
protein
structures composed of amino acids
amino acids
natural compounds composed of amine and carboxylic acid functional groups, linked to the same carbon atom
enzymes
a protein that acts as a biological catalyst
catalyst
increase in rate of a chemical reaction due to an added substance - catalyst
nucleic acids
large biomolecules that are crucial in all cells and viruses
nucleotide
the fundamental building block of nucleic acid
Hormone
studies hormones, chemical messengers that regulate various bodily functions
Steroids
includes all the sex hormones, adrenal cortical hormones, bile acids, and sterols of vertebrates, as well as the molting hormones of insects
Dehydration synthesis
the creation of larger molecules from smaller monomers where a water molecule is released
Hydrolysis
any chemical reaction in which a molecule of water breaks one or more chemical bonds
