unit 3 list 1 macromolecules Flashcards
(17 cards)
Macromolecule
a very large molecule, typically a polymer
Organic
compounds containing carbon, often with hydrogen, and are the basis of all known life.
Monomer
a small, simple molecule that can chemically bond with other similar molecules to form a larger, more complex molecule called a polymer
Polymer
a large molecule (macromolecule) composed of many repeating
Carbohydrates
a type of macronutrient found in foods and drinks, serving as the body’s primary source of energy, and include sugars, starches, and fiber
Lipids
fatty, waxy, or oily compounds
Fatty acids
the building blocks of the fat in our bodies and in the food we eat
Protein
large, complex molecules made of smaller units called amino acids
Amino acids
molecules that combine to form proteins
Enzymes
proteins that help speed up metabolism, or the chemical reactions in our bodies.
Catalyst
a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without being consumed or changed itself, essentially acting as a facilitator
Nucleic acids
large biomolecules that play essential roles in all cells and viruses
Nucleotide
the fundamental building block of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA)
Hormone
chemicals that coordinate different functions in your body by carrying messages through your blood to your organs, skin, muscles and other tissues
Steroids
Any of a group of lipids (fats) that have a certain chemical structure
Dehydration synthesis
the creation of larger molecules from smaller monomers where a water molecule is released
Hydrolysis
adding water to one large molecule to break it into multiple smaller molecules
