Unit 3.1 - divisions of the nervous system and parts of the brain Flashcards
(12 cards)
Name the 2 divisions of the nervous system.
- CNS (central nervous system)
- PNS (peripheral nervous system)
Name the divisions of the CNS.
- Brain
- Spinal Cord
Name the divisions of the PNS.
- ANS (autonomic nervous system)
- SNS (somatic nervous system)
State the function of the Brain and Spinal Cord.
Brain: responsible for processing information
Spinal Cord: links brain to PNS
State the two divisions of the ANS.
- sympathetic
- parasympathetic
Name the 5 different parts of the brain.
- cerebral cortex
- medulla
- cerebellum
- hypothalamus
- limbic system
What is the function of the medulla?
Regulates heart rate, breathing rate, sleep and arousal.
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Controls balance, posture, co-ordination, movement.
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
- regulates body temperature and water concentration.
- inhibits/stimulates hormone secretions from the pituitary gland.
What is the function of the Limbic System?
- processes information for memories
- influences emotional and motivational states
What connects the two cerebral hemispheres?
Corpus Callosum
What is the Corpus Callosum and what is it’s function?
A bridge of nerve fibres that connect the two cerebral hemispheres
Transfers information/impulses between the two hemispheres
