- Individual state/experience
- Of mental, emotional + physiological tension
- Resulting from a stressor

- Any stimulus
- That causes stress or is perceived as a threat and a challenge
- To our ability to cope

Internal stressor
A
- Cause of stress
- Originating from within the body of an individual
- Includes psychological + physiological
- E.g. sickness, rumination (overthinking)

- Cause of stress
- Originating from outside the body of an individual
- Such as an event or environmental extreme
- E.g. relationship breakdown, death of a loved one

Acute stress
A
- Stress that usually occurs due to a sudden threat
- Only lasts for a short time
- Adrenaline is prominent hormone released

Flight-or-fight-or-freeze response
A
- Automatic biological response
- To a perceived stressor
- That increases our chance of survival in our enviro
- Flight/fight: sympathetic
- Freeze: parasympathetic

- Associated with ongoing pressures or demands
- Cortisol is prominent hormone released
