Unit 4 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is a redox reaction?
the transfer of electrons from one reactant to another
What is reduction
the gain of electrons. the loss of a charge
What is oxidation
the loss of electrons, the gain of a charge
What is a reducing agent
aka the reductant, reduces something else
What do standard reduction potentials tell us
- how much a species wants to be reduced
What does a positive reduction value mean
better, stronger oxidizing agent, wants to be reduced, more energetically favorable 1/2 reaction, lower energy orbitals, halogens and O2
What does a negative reduction value mean
higher energy filled orbitals, less energetically favorable 1/2 reaction, alkalie and alkaline earth metals
what is an anode 1/2 cell and what happens there
- where oxidation 1/2 reaction happens
- electrons leave
-amt nuetral decreases
amt 2+ increases - cl comes in
What is a cathode 1/2 cell
- where reduction 1/2 happens
- electrons come in
- amt neutral increases
-k+ comes in
What do you need for Cathode Anode reactions?
a salt bridge
What does the net reaction number have to be for the reaction to take place?
positive
