Unit 4 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is deposition
When the sediment that a current is transporting is dropped
What are the reasons why rivers lose velocity and drop materials
Increased amount of sediment in the channel
Reduced volume of water in the channel
The rivers mouth is reached
Water becomes shallower
What are the upland areas in the UK?
Upland areas in the UK are often rugged, with steep relief(difficult for farming) and weathered rock. Sheep farming tourism and paper-making are popular activities
What are the lowlands in the UK?
The lowland areas are the best areas in the UK for farming. The soil is fertile and the relief is very gentil. Most of UKs lowlands are found in the South and East of the UK
What industries are popping in the lowland areas?
Cattle farming and carrot growing are strong industries in East Anglia
What are Metamorphic rocks?
Metamorphic Rocks are formed when heat and pressure cause other rocks to change. He resulting rock is harder and more compact
Give examples of metamorphic rock processes.
Shale becomes slate When exposed to heat and pressure
Slate becomes schist When exposed to more heat and pressure
What is sedimentary rock?
Sedimentary rocks are formed when layers of sediment are compacted together over time
Name THREE types of sedimentary rock in the UK
Carboniferous Limestone
Chalk
Clay
What are igneous rocks?
Igneous Rocks are formed from magma from the Earths crust cools and hardens
