Unit 4 (Experiment) Flashcards
(11 cards)
What defines an experiment?:
What defines an observational study?
Experiment: Deliberately imposes some treatment on individuals to measure their response
Observational: only observes individual and measures of variables of interest, but does not influence the response
What are the three types of experiments
Completely Randomized Design (CRD), Randomized Block Design, and Matched Pairs
what are the three types of random assignments?
CRD, Block, and Matched Pairs
How do you assign a CRD in an experiment?
1) Population
2) group the population
3), give each group a treatment,
4) draw conclusions based on each group
How do you assign a Block in an experiment?
1) Population
2) Block each group
3) give random assignments to each block
4) give two treatments to each group with respect to the random assignment
5) compare the results of each treatment
6) compare the results for each group
How do you assign Matched Pairs in an experiment? What are the requirements?
Is a special type of blocking.
Must be 2 similar subjects
Same subject, different parts
Same subject, different time
What are the factors in experiments limit confounding variables?
- Giving Treatments
- Blinding]
- Control:
- Replication:
-Comparison
what does it mean to blind the population
Blinding: when the participant does not know which experimental group they are in; this helps ensure there is no placebo effect
what does it mean to control a population to avoid confounding variables
Control: controlling variables that you can to prevent these other variables from becoming confounded
what does replication mean in an experiment:
Replication: means ensuring that there are an adequate number of subjects in each group
What do comparative groups mean?
Comparative groups: having multiple groups that are similar and are treated the exacted same way with the exception of treatments.
