Unit 4:Fields Flashcards
(22 cards)
Newtons law of universal gravitation
Every object attracts every other object in the universe
Microgravity
The condition in which people or objects appear to be weightless
Biotechnology
The application of engineering and technology to life sciences for improved health care on earth. The research is on protein crystal growth, and cell/tissue culturing
Protein crystals
Aid in the development of more effective drugs and life saving treatments for many diseases. And for potential transplant operations
Microgravity Fluid physics research
Lead to understanding effects of miniaturization of electronic materials and even smaller and more efficient electronic devices with reduce cost
Alloys
Alloys are mixtures of metals or metal and a nonmetal. When combined they can produce materials with improved strength or better resistance to corrosion.
Containerless processing
Creating pure material by suspending and manipulating a sample without touching contaminating containers
NASA combustion research
Research will lead to more efficient fuels, better fire safety, and a cleaner environment.
Weightlessness
A sensation experienced by an individual where no external objects are exerting a push or pull on them. The person is momentarily airborne. Astronauts are falling around the planet. They fall but move forward
True and false for weightlessness
F-Astronauts are weightless because there is no force of gravity.
T- Astronauts only have a force of gravity with no external forces. Constant state of freefall.
F-Astronauts are weightless due to reduced gravity.
T- Force if gravity is lessened but not enough to become weightless.
F-Weightlessness is due to absence of air in space.
T-Air pressure is 0 not gravity
Lunar tides
When water on earth is pulled towards the moon creating a bulge on the oceans surface
Solar tide
Water on earth is pulled towards the sun creating bulge on side of earth opposite the sun
Spring Tides
When the sun, moon, and stars are aligned. Extra high and low tides.
Neap tides
When moon and sun are perpendicular to each other. Moderate tides
Gravitational Field
The space surrounding an object in which another object experiences a gravitational force
Gravitational lensing
Mass bends light. The more massive the object, the stronger its gravitational field and greater bending of light
Dark matter (90% mass of galaxies)
Dark matter is large masses in outer space that bend light to where it shouldnt be. We cannot see dark matter because it does not emit or absorb light. but we know it exists through its interactions with stars and galaxies. It works through gravity only compared to normal matter interacting through gravity, nuclear forces and electrostatic forces.
Big bang theory
13.8 billion years ago, the earth was extremely small and filled with hot dense light. The universe began expanding and the light expanded with it and formed subatomic particles.
Time dilation
Time runs slower where gravity is strongest. Weak gravity =straight light
Strong gravity= bent light
The graviton
A hypothetical particle that has zero mass and travels at the speed of light. They are so weak that we cannot detect it
Electric field
The field or space around a charged particle where its forces can be experienced by other charged particles
