Flashcards in Unit 4.1 Deck (11):
1

Molecular formula

A chemical formula that shows the total number and kinds of atoms in a molecule, but not their structural arrangement.

2

Empirical formula

formula giving the proportions of the elements present in a compound but not the actual numbers or arrangement of atoms.

3

Chemical symbol

an abbreviation or short representation of a chemical element;

4

Oxidation number

the oxidation number of an atom is the charge that atom would have if the compound was composed of ions.

5

Ion

an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.

6

Polyatomic ion

also known as a molecular ion, is a charged chemical species (ion) composed of two or more atoms covalently bonded or of a metal complex that can be considered to be acting as a single unit.

7

Molecule

A molecule is an electrically neutral group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds.

8

Ionic compound

an ionic compound is a chemical compound composed of ions held together by electrostatic forces termed ionic bonding

9

Binary compound

compound containing two different elements.

10

Ternary compound

a compound containing three different elements.

11

Stock system

widely used system of chemical nomenclature developed by the German chemist Alfred Stock and first published in 1919. In the "Stock system", the oxidation states of some or all of the elements in a compound are indicated in parentheses by Roman numerals.
