  • If flow production used => operates in large scale => location of component suppliers is at greater importance as large number of components and materials will need to be transported => Should locate close or costs can be very high

  • Locating factory near the market for its product used to be thought important => especially if products gain weight and cost more to transport
  • Today, transport links are much improved => Being near to the market is less important even for weight-gaining products
  • If products perish quickly (milk, bread) should consider to locate near the market, but there are ways to preserve them

- Retailers want an area which is popular (shopping mall) - The type of shopper an area attracts will also influence the attractiveness of the area to particular types of retailers - If retailers sell expensive goods => need to be in area where people on high incomes visit; if the goods are small gift-type products => might want to be in area visited by tourists

- Being able to locate near to shops/businesses which are visited regularly (post office/fast-food outlet) => a lot of potential consumers pass the shop on their way to others shops - There may be competitors nearby => this is bad for a business; however is also an advantage; business sell clothes => being located to other cloth shops encourages people to visit the area as there are lots of choice

- Parking is convenient and near to the shops => encourages shoppers to visit that area => increase sales - A lack of packing may pot people off visiting the area => sales will be lower

- To encourage businesses to set up and expand in areas of high unemployment in some countries, these are called development areas - To discourage firms from locating in overcrowded areas or on sites which are noted for their natural beauty

What are two types of measures are often used by governments to influence where firms locate ?
- Planning regulations: legally restrict the business activities that can be undertaken in certain areas. e.g Business planning to open a factory in an area of residential housing/beautiful areas in the country => might be refused planning permission => against the law for the firm to build the factory on this site - Government grants or subsidies: to encourage business to locate in undeveloped parts of the country. Assistance could be in the form of financial grants, such as a non-repayable amount of money paid to the business to locate in a particular area or subsidies paid to businesses
