Unit 5 C2 Hooke's Law Flashcards

(10 cards)

1
Q

How do we define Hooke’s Law?

A

The extension produced by a force in a wire or spring is directly proportional to the force applied, up to the limit of proportionality.

Q

What is the limit of proportionality?

A

The
limit of proportionality
is the point beyond which Hooke’s law is no longer true when stretching a material

Q

What do the following stand for in the Hooke’ Law Equation?

ΔX
k
F

A

ΔX is the change in length, also know as the extension of the spring

k is the spring constant

Q

How is the spring constant calculated and what letter is used to represent it?

A

It is calculated by dividing the change in Force (N) by the change in the extension (cm).
We use the letter k to represent the spring constant.

Q

What is represented by the red area and the green area on the graph?

A

The red area is the elastic region, where the spring shows elastic behavior and will go back to it’s original shape when the force is removed.

The green area is the plastic region, where the spring will not return to it’s normal shape after the force is removed. It is now inelastic.
