Alliteration
Repetition of the initial consonants of words.
Free Verse
A poem without predictable rhyme, rhythm, or length of line or stanza.
Hyperbole
Excessive exaggeration to make a point
Imagery
The use of vivid words that appeal to the reader’s senses of sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch
Metaphor
A comparison of two dissimilar things that implies some sort of equality between the things.
Onomatopoeia
A word that makes the sound of the action it describes.
Personification
A comparison that gives human qualities to inanimate objects.
Rhyme scheme
The pattern of the end rhymes in a poem.
Simile
A comparison of two dissimilar things that uses “like” or “as”.
Speaker
The narrator of a poem.
Stanza
A group of lines of poetry, usually similar in length and pattern.
Symbol
Something in a poem that stands for something larger than itself.
