Term

A
  • Each term lasts for 4 years (the framers felt that this was long enough to have gained experience, demonstrate abilities, and establish stable policies)
  • Until the 22nd Amendment (1951), nothing in the Constitution limited the number of terms
  • They may serve 2, 4 years terms
  • The max possible of years serving would be 10: 2 full terms, + 2 years of a previous presidents term

How does the line of succession work?

A
  • If the President is unable to perform the duties of office the
    • Vice president ->Speaker of the House ->
      President Pro Tempore
    • After them it is the heads of each cabinet
      department in their order of which their
      offices were created
  • If the President wants to step down temporarily
    • If the President is disabled, Congress must
      be informed in writing and the Vice president
      temporarily assumes the duties, until
      Congress is informed that the President is
      well again
